Rex Ray

Rex Ray (1956–2015), born Michael Patterson, was a pioneering American artist whose work seamlessly blended fine art and commercial design. After moving to San Francisco in the early 1980s, he became an influential figure in the city’s creative and cultural scene.

Renowned for his signature style of layered textures, bold color palettes, and abstract organic forms, Ray combined traditional techniques with early digital tools—making him one of the first artists to integrate computer-based design into his creative process. His work draws inspiration from mid-century modernism, Pop Art, and decorative arts, resulting in pieces that feel both timeless and contemporary.

Over his career, Rex Ray collaborated with iconic brands and artists including David Bowie, Apple, Levi’s, and Warner Bros., while also exhibiting in major institutions such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Berkeley Art Museum.

Today, his work continues to resonate for its joyful energy, innovation, and unmistakable visual identity—celebrating color, creativity, and modern design.
