An intricate labor of love, the affection and sumptuous reproduction of the likeness of Klimt’s wealthy client Adele Bloch-Bauer took three years to complete. Painted with Oil, Silver, and Gold on Canvas the painting is as well-known for its scandalous and tumultuous history as for its daring integration of Byzantine mosaic techniques. Before her death, Bloch-Bauer bequeathed the work to the Austrian State Gallery but was immediately appropriated by the Nazi forces during World War II. The surviving husband of Adele, Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer declared the paintings the property of his heirs and heiresses. Nevertheless, the Austrian state held the paintings until their return in 2006 to relatives of the Bloch-Bauers.
